District 622 receives state funding to send more children to pre-k for free

School District 622 is one of 59 districts to receive state funding for voluntary school-based pre-kindergarten programs for 4-year-olds. These districts were announced by Governor Mark Dayton Aug. 4.

‘Into the Woods’ comes onto the Tartan stage


Tartan students rehearse for their upcoming Feb. 2 through Feb. 5 production of “Into the Woods.” A baker and his wife, played by Cody Arend and Mattie Albrecht, wish to have a child, but learn of a witch’s curse. The witch is played by Brooke Hafner. Meanwhile there is also Jack’s mother, played by Chaela Antonio, and Jack, played by Ethan Yang, who wish their cow would give milk.

Recently, Tartan High School celebrated an exciting event to recognize the achievements of longtime basketball coach Mark Klingsborn, who is better known to students as “Coach K.”

Hundreds of fans filled the stands at the Tartan boys basketball home opener. Coach K was honored for his induction into the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Former players, coaches and referees gathered for a photo with the coach before the tip-off. He also celebrated his 500th career win!

Local school takes a moment to remember its namesake, John Glenn


John Glenn Middle School was named after the first American to orbit Earth on Feb. 20, 1962. The former astronaut died last week.

John Glenn passed away Dec. 8 at the age of 95. He was the first American to orbit Earth and went on to have a long career as a U.S. senator from Ohio.

Hill-Murray is ringing in the season with two holiday shows


Above are the Hill-Murray seniors involved with at least one of this year’s two holiday shows. Seven seniors are involved with both “Almost, Maine” and “A Very Hill-Murray Christmas Cabaret.”

For the first time ever, Hill-Murray High School, which is known for its extensive theater program, is presenting two holiday shows in repertory, which means the two shows will be alternating performances within the same time period.

Hill-Murray Theatre to perform hilarious musical satire


Hill-Murray seniors cast and crew strike a pose as the theatre department gears up for the satirical musical comedy “Urinetown the Musical.” Performances are Oct. 6-8 at 7 p.m. And Oct. 9 at 2 p.m.

Hill-Murray Theatre will present the satirical musical comedy, “Urinetown the Musical,” on Oct. 6 through 8 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. in the Hill-Murray School Auditorium, 2625 Larpenteur Ave. E., Maplewood.
