Record-length sturgeon caught by retired Oakdale businessman


courtesy of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources • Jack Burke broke a Minnesota catch-and-release record for the longest lake sturgeon while fishing on the Rainy River with a neighbor May 4. The fish was 73 inches long with a 32-inch girth.

When Jack Burke got to a Rainy River boat landing around 6 a.m. May 4, he couldn’t have anticipated the success he would have fishing that day, but by 11 a.m.

Falcon Heights remembers Philando Castile with Restoration and Unity days


Mike Munzenrider • A memorial to Philando Castile stands near the spot on Larpenteur Avenue in Falcon Heights where he was killed by a police officer during a traffic stop in 2016. The Falcon Heights City Council passed a proclamation May 23 designating two July days in his memory.

Bringing shock and surprise, Ward 6 restaurant closes


Marjorie Otto/Review • During the afternoon of May 30, a line of people waited to be seated at Ward 6 restaurant for what could be their last meal there. The restaurant announced May 28 that it would be shutting its doors, serving its last meals during brunch on June 3.

After five and half years of calling Payne Avenue home and becoming a staple of the neighborhood, Ward 6 restaurant announced May 28 that the eatery would serve its last meals during brunch on Sunday, June 3.

Legal battles over White Bear Lake water level ruling continue

The city and others are fighting elements of the judge’s ruling that would mean costly changes to the way they deliver water to residents and business.

Legislature, DNR and North St. Paul resist water-use changes.

New nature center opens in Lake Elmo June 2
